What to charge, on one page. The quick version of the method behind my pricing calculator, with the costs most shops forget.

Troubleshooting

Test Stitch Checklist

A design stitched out badly? Run this two minute check before the real garment, and know whether the problem is your setup or the file. Includes the exact message to send your digitizer when it is the file.

Thread Break Check Order

Thread breaking mid run? Check needle, thread path, and speed before you ever touch the tension dial. The order matters, and tension is last for a reason. The full order is printed below, free, no signup needed for this one.

Calculator

Free Pricing Calculator

The browser version of my embroidery pricing calculator. Price one job properly before you quote it.

Starting out

Startup Checklist

Starting a shop? The whole sequence in order, on one printable page: paperwork, equipment, practice, pricing, and first customers. Eighteen steps, check them off as you go. It is the take home version of my startup guide.

Thread break check order

Thread breaking mid run? Check these in order before you touch the tension dial. Tension is almost never the first problem, and changing it first just gives you a second one.

1

Needle

Good for 8 to 10 hours of stitching, then it is dull. A dull or burred needle causes most breaks that get blamed on tension. Run a fingernail down the shaft. If it catches, swap it.

2

Thread path

Look for a snag, or a guide it jumped out of.

3

Speed

Drop to about 600 SPM and watch what is actually happening.

4

Tension, last

Half steps, with a test stitch between changes. One change at a time.
